DECISION TIME UGANDA
Ugandans cast their ballot on the 18th of February 2011. The elections attracted 7 presidential candidates including the incumbent Yoweri Museveni who has been in power for the past 25 years.
He is likely to win and his win will make him the longest serving East African president.
The voting exercise which was to kick off at 6am begun as late as 11am at some polling stations but countrywide, everything ran smoothly. Heavy down pour limited the voting exercise in some areas of Eastern Uganda.
Incidents of reported violence were quite few but there was a point in time when soldiers fired at a journalist injuring him as he was traveling with Budadiri’s former member of parliament who was accused of causing violence when a rival group of youths appeared on scene. One person is reported to have lost his life. Some voters names were missing on the register and as a result were denied a chance to vote.
In an amazing twist one of the Presidential candidates Dr. Olara Otunnu failed to cast his ballot. He had kept journalists and international observers waiting and when called he kept on saying that he was attending a series of meetings and will surely vote.
By 5pm which was the closing time, he had not turned up. He is the first presidential aspirant in history who has failed to cast his own ballot.
